Enkulturasi by Kainatarma Enkulturasi by Kainatarma

"Tenanglah dan terus tegarlah

Aku tidak sakit, aku tetap sakti

Walau aku dihajar, walau aku diajar.

Tentang saya dan dirinya

Pembudayaan.

Oleh para tikus, yang selalu mabuk air kakus."

Finally I draw something decent. Sorry for the messy coloring, I haven’t touch my watercolors for long. I planned to digitally color this (because of the details and the fact that the paper is too thin) and have done it halfway, but then I tried to color it traditionally. Yeah, it was fun and I think my digital coloring is still not good.

Enkulturasi is Indonesian loanword from English for “enculturation.” The synonym of it in Indonesian is “Pembudayaan.”

In this piece I fuse two very  different things from Indonesian and European origins. What you can see is a Cirebon Mask dancer (Tari Topeng Cirebon) is wearing a plague mask while holding a cartoonish-ly drawn  evil looking rat pointing at the dancer.

The Tari Topeng Cirebon ( Cirebon Mask Dance ) is a dance from Cirebon, West Java. The dance is unique because the dancer wear and changes masks while dancing (to play different characters, they wear mask by biting a wood pice inside it). I draw this dance when I was 12 (featured in my development meme, don’t go look at it: it sucks), and my friend was able to do this dance.

You can interpret this piece as you want to, but I will give just some notes this time. The plague mask is what doctors wear in that time when black death struck to protect the doctors. Meanwhile the disease itself caused by Yersinia pestis, which has vector of fleas which is present in rats. Rats are often connotated as something dirty, greedy, and cunning. In Indonesia is often connotated as symbol of the act of corruption, the very trouble in Indonesia and other countries. The curtain behind is to emphasis “This is just a show”, because dance is a show too. But it is more than that.

I aim to make this piece looks a bit like traditional old drawing. I should make something with colder colors. And gah! The headgear is really something!

Oh wow, this is just amazing! I love the cultural fusion you've done here. The headgear indeed is really something. The colours--it's like I'm transported to another world, another time...

This piece seems to be about death and corruption, as well as a kind of fakeness. Perhaps the whole dance, as just a show, is a mask for concealing something rotting?

It does indeed look like an old traditonal piece, I really think you achieved that well :) Love all the details you put into this and your drawing style, as usual! So is your art block gone, I hope? :)

Thank you :-) :heart:

Well, it better that I have ideas of what to draw again (and mood to continue my story again). But damn, that too much to do and I'm confused right now! ^^;

This is a beautiful piece, the details and the colours are gorgeous, especially on the dancer's costume. And there's an interesting message behind this piece too, I like that. Great work, keep it up! :)

Thank you for giving us a bit of the tradition and culture of this dance. She's very brave to be holding the rat in her hand! :omg: Aside from the rodent, the details and colors are very beautifully done!
